Hump Day

I am just SO behind on everything right now. But then again, I’m always treading water during faire season, because I don’t have my weekends free to catch up. It didn’t help when I got sick after the first weekend of faire and basically spent a week and a half just trying to get healthy again.

And then I made a post last Friday to my alumni group on Facebook that ended up generating over 500 comments. O_O So that sucked up a bunch of my time Friday and Monday, getting caught up on all the shenanigans related to that. Which included someone blogging about the thread and misquoting a bunch of people. Leading to a second thread, this one about the people upset about being misquoted and wanting the forum moderator to ban the blogger. And then the forum moderator private messaged me, because the third-party tool that he uses to help manage the community wasn’t working, and did I have “App, Websites, and Plug-ins” disabled on my Facebook account? You bet your bippy I do. And the fact that his tool was failing to see a public post because I said I didn’t want to share non-public data about myself? Proves that having that setting set to NOPE was the right choice. Why would his app/tool need to access any non-public information about me to gather stats on a public post?

At any rate, the time spent on that was time I probably should have been spending on other things. Like sleeping or loving on my kitties or working on projects for faire.

Or getting caught up on my reading. I can’t remember the last time I had time to read Live Journal. And I’m at least a week behind on Dreamwidth. I haven’t been reading the New York Times (but that’s partly by choice, I’m a bit exhausted by the relentless news cycle of hurricanes, 45, and other disasters). Or caught up on my writing. So much going on, that I haven’t had time to write about.

At least I had the energy to do some housework when I got home tonight. I vacuumed, ran a load of laundry, and washed some dishes. Yay for small progress.

I have a new cube neighbor at work, a woman perhaps about my age. Her name is Meg, and she’s a Product Manager, also working in middleware. Not sure if we’ll be working together or not, it’s only her first day in the office, she’s still getting set up after New Hire Orientation. But since my project seems to want to integrate with everything, chances are we might end up working together eventually. At least it’s going to be a bit less lonely around here (so many empty cubes near me!).

Still on baby watch.

I can't wait until Monday (I took another day off for faire recovery).

The Orville

I came home last night and ended up watching some TV on the DVR. I watched the first two episodes of The Orville, Seth MacFarlane’s new science fiction show. It’s clearly supposed to be a riff on Star Trek, because what clean shiny space show isn’t? I thought, from the trailers, that it might end up being a comedy in the vein of Galaxy Quest (but probably raunchier, we are talking Seth MacFarlane here). It’s not nearly as funny as I thought it would be. But they’re certainly not playing it quite straight enough for a drama. But it’s not quite so straight that it's camp either. It’s weird, after two episodes, I still can’t decide what to make of it (or if I like the show or not).

Maybe spoilers? Not really…. )

I don’t know if I’ll keep watching this one or not. I’m not in love with it. But I don’t hate it yet either. I’ll give it a couple more episodes and see if it gets any better.

I have a 4 day weekend.

I am getting ready for the ceramic show. I don't think it will do well, but we re trying. I do like the 1 day concept, but I think out tables are too expensive....but we have to cover 1.5 days of a hall rental.

I am looking for some good things.....

I may go play tomorrow morning and work in the afternoon.

Poor Cassie

I went in to make the bed this morning and didn't realize that Cassie had burrowed down into the pile of blankets (she usually sleeps on the folded up fleece blanket I have off to the side for the kitties to enjoy). I yanked on the covers and the poor thing came tumbling out. I felt so bad, she was clearly asleep and hadn't heard me come in. =(

But she got lots of lovins before I left for the office. Everyone did.

Brownies anyone?

Yesterday someone brought in brownies to share in the kitchen at work. They were cut into tiny squares, so I took two, But after I ate the first one I decided (like I often do) that I wanted a glass of milk with my brownie. So I wrapped the second tiny chocolate chunk up in a tissue to take home and have after dinner. Where I put it on the counter and promptly forgot about it.

Until about 3:00 am, when I was woken up by the distinctive clinking of dishes and glassware. Which meant that some naughty kitty was on the kitchen counter (and that I really needed to get around to emptying and filling the dishwasher). I jumped out of bed to go yell at whoever it was. Let me tell you, discovering a brown blob on the carpeting in the middle of the night when you’re not wearing your glasses is not a fun experience.

Brutus had dragged the brownie out of the kitchen and all the way into the hallway. It definitely had teeth marks in it, so it went into the trash. *mourns loss of my brownie*

I’m more convinced than ever that the previous owner 1) probably fed these kitties people food (evidenced by all three of them swarming me the first time I bought home McDonald’s french fries) and 2) probably let the kitties go hungry more than once (evidenced by how they eat normally if I keep the food bowl full, but bolt their food if I let it go empty. And how all three of them prowl the kitchen counters looking for food scraps).

The VP that I am fond of just told us he was leaving the company in October.... and does not have a job lined up. I am sad for him as his twin girls are in year 2 of an expensive college here in Boston.

I am worried to as he was a buffer .... and a better VP than my 2 cousins have... that one is a prick.

I am curious how John, the boss I really like... like I'd date him..., will hold up.... will he stand up for the way we work , which is more laid back than my cousins, or will he cave. I could loose my hours... the only thing that makes it okay here... we'll accept from John 😉

So the nun who won the axe throwing contest back in 2015 was at faire again this weekend with two of her nun friends. I recognized her because I’ve got a photo of her with her prize from the contest on my hard drive. The guys from the Hitting and Stabbing Emporium went out of their way to find an appropriate prize for her. Since clerics aren’t supposed to carry edged weapons, they found a mace for her somewhere, and that was her prize. Supposedly she’s a school teacher and had said she’d use the mace to keep her students in line.

They were at the entrance to the encampment and I went running over to them and was just the biggest fangirl. “You’re the one who won the axe throwing contest at the Hitting and Stabbing Emporium, aren’t you?” She laughed, and her friends did too (I think I recognized one of them as the nun that was with her that year). We chatted for a few moments, and she said she was planning to go visit Hitting and Stabbing again.

I just think it's awesome that the nuns like to come out to the renn faire.

some B&W

I have been challenged to a 7 day B&W photo project. No words, no questions, and no people. This is good as it gets me back tossing the camera and learning this new editing program (learning is more like wrestling)

This and that.

Fighting he bad memory head space... Hind sight is 20/20... and painful considering what happened to Ma.

Trying to keep busy... and brain filled with other things.

I have been asked to come up with a craft program for the developmentally disabled people I did this with a few years ago. Trying to decide if 3or 4 projects that take 2 weeks or more each would be better than trying to do 6 like before. Not all the people are at the same level and so the time it takes to do a project varies. I am thinking of a ceramic item, a jewelry item, and a painting item.

For the jewelry I want to do the memory wire bracelets...I will also be making these for a craft show. Like this type of bracelet because =, depending on the beads, it can be fancy or Bohemian.

For the painting I wanted to do a button tree... it is something I would put in my house. You paint a stylized bare branch tree and then you glue on buttons for the leaves. This is great if you happen to have Grandma's button box, or just a few special buttons.

I also thought of getting some rough would and letting them stain it. Then stenciling some words and glue things onto the board. An example is the words :Make a wish upon a star fish. Then glue craft starfish to the board. It should be rustic and artsy.

After work I took a trip to the pottery place in Braintree to get slip... and they were out of it... so I guess all I can take to the ceramic show is what I have made so far... I now need to prep it all for the kiln and fire it up. Fingers crossed I sell things...

Tonight I took a break from clay dust and visited friends. We watched a show called Dr. Blake's Mysteries... an Aussie mystery show set after WW2. The lead actor reminds me a lot of a man at the Rent Faire that I had a crush on for 23 years.... I am such a silly woman

Busy day and I want to get to bed for faire tomorrow, so you get a bullet post!
  • Survived the trip to the vet. And the kitties not being fed until 3:00 so that their meds stayed down. There was even peaceful sleeping after all that excitement (the girls on the same ottoman, a small miracle!)
  • Worked at home today which meant I got much laundry done! (Sheets, all the cat blankets, and darks)
  • Also got the house tidied up and did the Hoovering. I feel like I’m almost keeping up with the housework this faire season. Go me!
  • I took out the trash AND the recycling! Whoot!
  • And made a grocery run. Foods! Om nom nom.
  • Also paid and mailed the bills! Whoo! On a roll!
  • Still on baby watch, no bébé yet.

And there was much rejoicing.

I am happy to report that we've survived our first trip to the vet! And nobody made a mess in their carrier on the car trip. They were mostly well behaved, no hissing or scratching. The only person who got scratched was me, despite the fact that everyone got a manicure before we went. Someone raked me with their hind leg when I was holding them for the vet.

No ear mites. They all got treated for tapeworms. And Brutus got his anal gland squeezed (poor boo!). Hopefully between the two, that will clear up the hot spot on his tail.

Now to see how long before they forgive me. (And I can't feed them until the afternoon, so they don't upchuck their meds.). I suspect it might be a long afternoon.

Kitties are going to the vet tomorrow, and since I don't know if they'll get carsick or not, I've emptied the food bowl.

Brutus is always so polite but insistent about letting me know when the food bowl is empty.

I hope he lets me get some sleep tonight.

Tuesday – back to work

I finally put on pants and drove into the office again today. And, because I feel better, my sinuses decided to celebrate and drain. Oh joy! I was just a fountain of phlegm today!

I just felt generally disorganized after working at home all last week. I should have looked at my calendar yesterday. I thought my every-other-Tuesday full of meetings was last week. But it was this week. And I missed my 8:00 am meeting. Whoops. Well, I think that’s the first time I’ve missed it, so I’m not going to feel horrible about it. It just wasn’t the best way to start the day. Running late, and then finding out you’re later than you thought. Bugger.

I was also buried in e-mail. I guess everyone is back from their August vacations, because suddenly I can’t keep my inbox clear.

And my boss’s boss, our Director, is in the Westford office this week. He’s based in Minneapolis, so I hadn’t met him yet. Since he was here, the local Technical Writers all came into the office (including the new hire who started yesterday) and we went out to lunch. It was pretty cool getting to have a casual chat with him. He’s been with the company for twelve years; it was interesting to hear all the different roles he’s had over the years. And hearing some of the thing things he’s working on as far as initiatives (we’re doing a lot of thinking about how to re-work our Customer Portal to improve customer experience).

And I really love working for a company where, after you end a video conference call, the three people in the room have a discussion about how our team’s first task (and main mission until we complete it) should be to “get Gary a helper.” The local Pride chapter (LGBTQA diversity and inclusion group) met today to reorganize. Our company recently opened an office in Boston, so our local leader moved to that office. But he’s the only Pride member in Boston. And he’s currently overloaded (working 14 hours a day). So our first priority is going to be recruiting someone else in the Boston office to help him and keep him from working himself to death by taking on more work doing all the Pride stuff for the Boston office. Because he will. He’s just that kinda guy. And we don’t want him to do that to himself.

Also, one of very few “out” trans folk is out on medical leave right now. But when the folks on the conference call from HQ asked what our local group wants to focus on, three of us immediately said, “Trans rights.” Because we knew if she was here, that’s what she’d say. And also because MA is a bit ahead of North Carolina when it comes to LGBT rights, so we’re dealing with some different issues. We were the first state to legalize gay marriage way back in 2003, North Carolina didn’t legalize it until 2014. Plus they had that HB2 bathroom bill debacle.

Came home to a hairball on The Comfy Chair. Thanks guys. Nice to know you missed me while I was gone. =P

And I turned on the TV and checked the listings and lo and behold. Cinderella was on!
